Exploring San Francisco: Lands End Trail
Where is Lands End Trail? What trail did we take and how long is it?
Lands End Trail is on the west side of San Francisco near Sea Cliff and Outer Richmond. We took the Coastal Trail. We started off at Sutro Baths and then headed toward the Lands End Labyrinth and finished the coastal trail hike at Lands End Trail Eagles Point near Sea Cliff. Sea Cliff is a beautiful area with gorgeous Pacific Ocean view houses. We continued walking through the neighborhood and ended our walk at China Beach, which is quite empty and extremely relaxing!
We took the bus and used our Clipper card. Each ride on the public bus is $2.50. Get exact change if you don’t have a card because they don’t give change on the bus. For the bus, we took the 38 R (which stands for rapid/express) from Union Square to 48th ave. Uber pool or Lyft is also another option, it can be less to $10.
How hard is the hike?
The hike isn’t too hard as it is pretty flat. There were people with strollers as the trail was well paved for majority of the hike. There are some staircases here and there to get the blood pumping. The trail became a little harder if you walk toward the Labyrinth as it wasn’t as flat as the main trail (rocks here and there) and it was more narrow. Since the Labyrinth is right by the ocean, it’s always a bit windy, so be careful!
What are the best view points?
The Labyrinth area definitely has the best view points, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, the coastal line, and the Labyrinth! Along the way, you will see the bridge through the branches and that was one of Dustin’s most favorite things on the hike. The closer you get to China Beach, the closer and bigger the Golden Gate Bridge is.
Recommend?
It’s a great way to spend the day. If you’re looking for a strenuous hike, this might not be the one. However, this is completely worth the time as it has great flora and fauna along the trail and the views are great. It’s not the best view of the Golden Gate Bridge, but the coastal line from the Labyrinth is beautiful! I recommend it you’re looking for a few hour hike that is easy to get to in San Francisco!
- Ocean & Branches – love this view!
- A beautiful view along the hike
- Did you know this body of water is called “Golden Gate”?
- The trees here are so unique; the shapes the trees create are amazing. Look through the branches – you’ll see the Golden Gate Bridge!
- Can’t get enough of the West Coast, best coast 🙂
- Cliffs & Ocean
- Jacket by Uniqlo (this jacket is perfect for San Francisco)
- Golden Gate Bridge, I see you!
- Dustin’s favorite thing on this trail was finding the Golden Gate Bridge through the branches
- Enjoying nature
- Labyrinth made of stones on the coast
- You can barely see the bridge now! Fog city 🙂
- Lots of green on this walk – beautiful!
- We found the perfect rock to sit on! It was awesome when the waves crashed against the rock, but we didn’t get wet!
- All smiles
- Sound of the waves are so serene

Some people were swimming but it was pretty chilly
